  1. RHIALTO THE MARVELLOUS 2 - A black ink and gray pencil drawing on an 11 x 14 size vellum paper. It appears in the book, "Rhialto the Marvellous" by Jack Vance.

Most professional illustrators, perhaps all of them, have file cabinets filled with source material that they go to for information and inspiration. I was one of them. But when I had to illustrate a Jack Vance story I seldom opened a file cabinet drawer because I knew there was nothing in those files that would help me. His unique characters and unusual fantasy worlds seemed to cry out to me not to bother with my "reference" material, but to rely on his word-pictures for inspiration.

So that's what I usually did. When I drew these "Rhialto" drawings I had already spent ten years as a self-employed illustrator and had accumulated enough drawing experience to illustrate almost anything without having to refer to any source material, especially when it came to drawing imaginary worlds.

    Desideratum 1:
In this infinite universe where I live, everything is moving toward perfection.
Life is never static, each moment is a new one open for me to do something new.
I have the power to create, I will begin right here, right now.
